And while I'm taking a quick break from politics....

Let's explore American MUSIC. The glue that has hel us together since the earliest settlers!

LOL Yes, I’m taking a quick break from politics, and talking about some of my own passions. One of these is music. I first started with music back in 1965, when my mother started my piano lessons.. Then later, in middle and high school, I turned to my favorite instrument, the trumpet.

Even though I haven’t kept up with the trumpet because my embouchre (lip strength and ability to create the tones in the brass instruments) is just not good enough these days, I still play my keyboard (no room for a real piano in my current house).

So on to music.. The history of music in America first started with the early settlers from various countries, the majority being native Americans, Europe, Africa, and even the Caribbean islands!

Key Aspects of American Music Culture:

  • Diversity and Fusion:

American music is characterized by its multicultural roots, incorporating influences from Native American, European, African, and other traditions.

  • Regional Styles:

Different regions of the United States have developed unique musical styles, such as the blues of the Mississippi Delta, the Appalachian folk music of the South, and the Tejano music of Texas.

  • Genre Evolution:

From its beginnings with indigenous music and European folk traditions, American music has seen the rise and evolution of distinct genres, including blues, jazz, country, rock and roll, soul, and hip-hop.

  • Social and Historical Impact:

Music has played a significant role in reflecting and shaping American society, with genres like blues and gospel often addressing social issues and the experiences of marginalized communities.

  • Global Influence:

American music has had a profound impact on popular music around the world, with genres like rock and roll, hip-hop, and country becoming international sensations.

Where did American music begin? With Native Americans and original inhabitants of America, of course. Native American folk music blended with European folk music in the 1500's once they started invading. Later, African slaves bought their own folk music.

But it has expanded into a world-wide phenomenon of musical tradition and culture. Many newer genres became popular, among them, Blues, Jazz, Country, Rock n Roll, and finally Hip-Hop.

Blues:

Born from African American oral traditions, blues music has influenced countless other genres and is a cornerstone of American musical culture.

Jazz:

A uniquely American art form, jazz emerged in the early 20th century and is known for its improvisation, syncopation, and complex harmonies.

Country:

A genre with roots in folk music of the British Isles and African American blues, country music is deeply embedded in American culture and has evolved into a global phenomenon.

Rock and Roll:

Emerging in the mid-20th century, rock and roll blended elements of blues, jazz, and country music, becoming a powerful force in youth culture and shaping American society.

Hip-Hop:

Born in the Bronx in the 1970s, hip-hop is a cultural movement that encompasses music, dance, and visual art, and has become a dominant force in popular music worldwide.

All of the above music genres are pure American, although most are blended from influences in other cultures, nations, and music. But we, as Americans, seem to have been driven by finding new avenues of expressing ourselves, and putting to a beat, the angst, desire, sadness, and jubilation of our lives and culture.

Let me know what YOUR favorite genre is… I’m curious, and I’ll wait a while, then publish what the ongoing music fascination of Substackers is!
